Re:Source

Agristo and Impetus decided to closely cooperate to fully valorize side streams of potato processing industries. A joint venture between both parties was set up to accomplish just that: Re:Source.

Within Re:Source, Impetus is in charge of day-to-day management. Ranging from setting up new R&D tracks to managing the investment projects that arise from them. As a first investment, a new factory will be built in Wielsbeke, in which a tailor-made and unique process will be installed.

YEAFA

Impetus has developed a new, highly efficient process to valorize side streams from beer breweries. Together with Transagro Bouton and INVE BELGIE, Impetus has invested more than 10M€ to build a production plant and make this process a reality.

A classic Impetus project: we took care of the process development, from lab to full scale, engaging our multidisciplinary team and out of the box-approach to design the plant and to keep the project economically realistic. To further optimize the plant, Impetus designed the process to integrate excess heat from Ostend Basic Chemicals to make the process even more sustainable. Impetus also took full charge of Yeafa, managing the complete project, starting from R&D, engineering, construction as well as providing a management structure during and after start-up.

H2P

Impetus was part of a Flanders’ FOOD project together with Clarys Food Ingredients and Avecom, called ‘H2P - Hydrogen to Protein’. The goal of the project was to investigate the creation of Single Cell Proteins (SCP) using gas fermentation of hydrogen and CO2.

For this project, Impetus designed a pilot reactor from scratch. Through literature screening on fermentation technology and using the existing gas reactor technology we managed to create a fast track to a first version of a highly efficient gas fermentor that immediately proved to be successful. A clever concept to operate the fermentor as a completely closed system drastically improved the production efficiency.

This gas fermentation unit is now available for further development of the gas fermentation technology and high pressure fermentation.

RECUPOTATO

This project focuses on creating added value in the potato processing sector by recovering valuable nutrients, such as starch and protein, from water streams. Through intensive research and development, we have pioneered an innovative process that efficiently extracts these nutrients, enabling their application in sustainable food production. From conducting pilot tests to refining the process, Impetus collaborates closely with partner companies to ensure a comprehensive approach. Moreover, we establish solid business cases and strategies, ensuring the viability and success of this groundbreaking endeavor. Join us as we transform waste into valuable resources, driving sustainability and innovation within the food industry.

Valpromic

Impetus joined the Valpromic project (Clarebout Potatoes, Agristo, Avecom) at a challenging time. The Valpromic process, in which Single-Cell Proteins (SCP) are created on waste- and processwater streams, was proven successful on lab scale. Impetus designed, built and operated the pilot setup to validate the complete process and to collect all the necessary data to build up the business case

Solving the problem of the drying step in the production process was the most challenging hurdle to unlock a positive business case. Impetus compared and tested many drying techniques that were theoretically possible, and redesigned the drying process to be tested. A small scale dryer was built to validate the process and later upscaled for the pilot setup.

In the next phase, the SCP creation process was scaled up twice, increasing the capacity tenfold each time. Main focus: to identify the sensitivity of the incoming wastewater streams and to better characterize the quality of the created SCP. Impetus designed the equipment to be easily relocated.

After process validation, Impetus was the driving force to further finetune the business case, including business development.
